Council using Bailiffs and Bankruptcies to collect Council Tax

New figures have revealed the soaring use of court orders and bailiffs to collect council tax, as local families struggle to make ends meet. In Stevenage, bills have more than doubled (rising 121%) since 1997.

Stephen McPartland said “the new figures show that 1,571 local households had bailiffs knocking at their door for unpaid council tax last year. And most shocking, another 2 people were made bankrupt by the courts for their council tax debts here in Stevenage”.

“The fact that Labour Ministers have blocked a council tax freeze for England shows how out of touch they are with the plight of hard-working families and pensioners.”

“Hertfordshire County Council have shown the way by freezing their Council Tax and  Stevenage Borough Council must accept my challenge to freeze their Council Tax and give local families a much needed break”.
